
Why
Waste segregation is time-consuming and poorly handled in most urban/rural areas, leading
to low recycling and poor worker safety.
Problem
Manual segregation is unhygienic, inconsistent, and inefficient, especially in mixed waste
streams.
Solution
Designed a multi-sensor smart bin using ultrasonic, inductive, IR, and moisture sensors
to classify waste into 5 categories. Integrated stepper/servo motors for precise disposal.
How to overcome?
Calibration of sensors in mixed conditions caused misclassification. Solved by creating a sensor fusion algorithm and adding an IR tape for bin alignment.
Result
Working prototype successfully segregated waste in real-time with >90% accuracy. Patent
filed; scalable to residential & industrial settings.
